useful (and useless!) things for the home we live in a world dominated by objects made by machines. the only measure of quality for a machine is uniformity.
with machines it is possible to make each item virtually identical. in fact it is only possible to make them so.

my skills are insufficient to make two things the same.
that's a bit of luck, 'cause i ain't all that interested in that kind of quality!
shot glass, 80-100mm tall; £14 - very efficient! my glasses are individuals, and when they are assembled into sets, they are siblings, brothers & sisters, alike and unalike. in every set of glasses one will hold more than all the rest, and one will hold less, the rest being in between.
it's only logical that the owner of the set should aquaint him or herself through research which is which. in such knowledge lies considerable power - the power as host to decide who gets the largest glass and who the smallest.

methods of determining the relative capacities of glasses:
1. a.) choose what appears to be the largest and fill it brimfull with appropriate liquid. (n.b. it is useless to test with water.)
b.) decant the liquid into the apparently next largest, and if you are right, there is a dividend to dispose of. if wrong, top it up & go back to a.)
c.) return to b.) until the smallest glass is identified.
d.) try to remember which is which.
2. well, that's the best one, but you can also do it starting with the smallest. then you get no dividends until the 'baloon' payment at the end.
3. i forget the rest, you work it out...
4. you may choose to keep the largest for yourself or, perhaps, to selectively impair someone else's judgement to your advantage...

my glasses do vary, but not this much within a set... we at north glen take our responsibilities seriously.
as makers it is our duty to make the products as well as we are able.
as designers it is necessary to be thoroughly familiar with the intended use of the product. to this end we are engaged in a programme of continuous testing and research, (hic!)
involving much night and weekend work.
that's dedication!
we gather many sorts... which ones are toadstools...?
